Collections: "So.. You like Teapots then??"

I've been looking at collections in the Family Home today after reading the Lippman text mentioned below.

I've been questioning the function of a collection.

Books anyone?

This is a montage of all the bookshelves in my parents house. Its a collection alright! Did you notice the square holes put in the wall especially? Their function is to educate, inform, and entertain. And I don't know about you but there is nothing more pleasing that seeing a brimming bookshelf. It makes a home. I'm not sure if my parents went out of their way to fill their home with books, its probably something that just happened. But how about intentional collecting. Why do people do it?
Why did this woman do it!!??

I guess people get attached to certain objects and the idea of the object, maybe the nostalgia around it. They could use it to reflect certain aspects of their personality and find that tying themselves to the object will make an impact on their lives. I find it hard to judge though.

My mum collects teapots, but when I ask her about them, there is very little to report. You could say she likes them because she likes tea, but she doesn't use any of them to make tea in. She buys them from flea markets, ebay and antique fayres. She once bought a teapot because there was fudge inside of it. Her favourite teapot cost her 80p. Nothing has influenced her collection. One thing I have noticed about her collection though is how vast it has grown since me and my sister left home.
