D&AD

A few weeks ago, just after christmas, I made a trip over to manchester for cake and culture and to meet with my lovely friend Claire Mcloughlin. We visited Urbis where they were exhibiting the winners of 2007's D&AD awards. I found it really inspiring, from the team work entrants, such as that amazing Sony Bravia advert, which everyone is sure to have seen..

Which included a 10 minute documentary on how they did it. THEY ACTUALLY DID IT! AND THEN CLEANED IT ALL UP AFTERWARDS!

I also liked work from smaller entrants such as this witty and hard hitting play on the ladybird books, but with the intention on preventing underage sex and the peer pressure surrounding it.. they're called Be books by the collective GRP.

One exhibit which actually moved me was this..

unfortunately I didn't note down who it is by, but i remember the concept. Its for a charity who work to help people who suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts. to get inside the envelope you must un-tye the noose from around the victims neck. it made my neck tingle!!

Afterwards we hit up the Bloomberg New Contemporaries exhibition at the Corner House. New Contemporaries is an annual competition in which anyone graduating from a fine art course anywhere in the UK can enter to have their work as part of the exhibition which visits 3 galleries in London, Liverpool and Manchester. There were 37 entrants this year, including a friend of mine named Rhys Coren whos work is based around word and poetry and installation..

another favourite was the work of janine mclellan who produced knitted dolls with gary glitters face!!
